Experiment with what feels the best to you. Experiment with what increases the volume and attack of your playing without being destructive or just plain annoying. One of the benefits of having a longer nail on your picking hand is that the nail gives another platform to strike the string, and as you release the finger from the fret, the nail smoothly rolls off of it.
Try filing down the nails from a degree angle, and from underneath, rather than from the side. Moreover, when filing the nail, use the curvature of the end of your fingertips as a guide for the direction and slope. Ultimately, the fretting hand nails are the least important, and the goal should simply be to remove sharp edges and potential obstructions.
In other words, some players may actually go to a salon to get fake nails, like women commonly do. Having long nails on your fretting hand will actually get in the way of fretting the note, because if the nail is too long, it will literally obstruct the finger from pressing on to the fretboard, thus, making it more challenging to properly produce the desired sound.
Another rule of thumb is for there to be just a little bit of white showing. If you want a great example of this, check out Dolly Parton. She admits to trimming her nails completely when she writes songs, but she likes to wear long acrylic nails on stage.
Her secret? She tunes her guitar in an open tuning. Using this tuning means that Dolly can play full chords without really having to push a lot of strings down. If you have very long nails, you may have to trim them down slightly to do this. This can be a little tricky. It will take some practice, but the more you do it, the easier it will become. Strumming is the easy part of having long nails. Long nails may hamper your ability to hold a pick comfortably.
But it can be done! Sometimes it sounded great, but I was unable to consistently achieve that tone I knew was in there. Long or short, the shape, finish and condition of your nails define the tone and feel you will get from your instrument.
The length of your nails does have an impact on tone. Indeed, in some cases, longer nails can actually reduce the versatility of your tonal palette by restricting you from using a combination of flesh and nail. Try keeping your nails to no more than mm over the end of your fingertip. There is no definitive right way to shape your nails - this depends on the natural curvature of your nails and your particular hand position and playing style.
However, on plucking a note there are three basic phases or interactions between your nail and the string: the contact point, the string travel and the release point. Play slowly and watch carefully how your fingertip and nail interact with the string. Once you understand these three phases, you will be able to shape your nails for the tone you want. The contact point has some effect on sound, but is particularly important in establishing control, defining feel and enabling speed.
The main thing to look for is the balance between flesh and nail on this initial contact. Most people, particularly men, do not have nails which protrude past the length of the finger. If you hold your nails up from the side, you are unlikely to see nail growth passing the tip of the finger.
However, when your fingers are pressing into the guitar, the nail can get in the way. If it does, that means the nail might interfere with your playing by making it harder to push into the fretboard. Shorter is better, but be sure not to trim the nails too short. Overzealous trimming can cause you to expose the sensitive nail bed underneath the nail, and this can be painful. As a rule of thumb, leave a small sliver of white when you trim your fretting-hand nails.
Guitar beginners often attempt to play the guitar with fret hand nails that are too long, leading to frustrating results. Keeping your nails in good shape for guitar is more important than you may realize. If your fret-hand nails become overgrown, you will feel frustrated as you try to play the notes on the guitar neck. You can clip them while watching a video or waiting for a pot of water to boil.
