Friday evening we noticed mites in our crabitat, so I immediately went to buy new playsand. I boiled my "toys", and bathed my crabs; first in crab saltwater then flushed them with fresh spring water to get any mites off as suggested in this forum. Anyhow, when I woke up on Saturday, I was completely covered in hives. My husband and I eliminated any possible allergies. No new soap detergent or new foods in the past 48 hours. I went to the care center on Saturday and received two injections, one of steriod and one of benadryl.

If it relates to one of the sections below, please post there instead. I was just wondering what kind of precautions people take caring for hermit crabs with an allergy.

Re: Shellfish Allergy Post by wodesorel » Sun Feb 24, am Hermit crabs don't actively shed, but they can produce allergens in both spit and feces. You should talk with your allergist to find out how severe your allergy is and if incidental contact is a danger. You'll have skin contact from handling and cleaning up after them, but also the possibility of airborne particles from dried feces.

For someone with severe allergic reactions, it could be a real risk. As far as their diet, watch all ingredients and steer clear of all mixes that contain shellfish and also dried seafood like tiny sardines as cross-contamination is common. Staying away from insects would be a good idea as well, as cross-reactions have been noted.

Symptoms Hives, itching or eczema atopic dermatitis Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat, or other parts of the body. Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. Can you get sick from hermit crabs? Hermit crabs require both freshwater and saltwater water sources to survive.

Saltwater should be made using sea salt sold for marine fish and crustaceans. Hermit crabs are intelligent, entertaining, and make great pets. They need friends! Despite their name, hermit crabs are social animals and ideally need to be in pairs or groups. Being allergic to one does not always mean that you must avoid both, though care is needed to prevent cross-contact between fish and shellfish.

Discuss this issue in detail with your allergist to make sure the appropriate food restrictions are implemented. About 60 percent of people with shellfish allergy experience their first allergic reaction as adults.

Shellfish can cause severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. Allergic reactions can be unpredictable, and even very small amounts of shellfish can cause one. If you have a shellfish allergy, keep an epinephrine injection device with you at all times.

Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis. To prevent a reaction, it is very important to avoid all shellfish and shellfish products. Always read food labels and ask questions about ingredients before eating a food that you have not prepared yourself. Most people who are allergic to one group of shellfish are allergic to other types. Your allergist will usually recommend you avoid all kinds of shellfish.

If you are allergic to a specific type of shellfish but want to eat other shellfish, talk to your doctor about further allergy testing.

Steer clear of seafood restaurants, where there is a high risk of food cross-contact. You should also avoid touching shellfish and going to fish markets.
